It was a fire temple in the Sassanid era before this place became a mosque. Moreover, because of including a pillar bottom, it proved the pre-Islamic history of the building. However, the exact foundation date of it remains a mystery. That is to say, it belongs to Seljuq Dynasty, a renovation had been done during Safavid Dynasty. Furthermore, the Seljuks first attack Khorasan and then into the heart of Persia, before finally conquering Baghdad and then eastern Anatolia. Here is a comment about the Jameh Mosque of Isfahan from a traveler, on TripAdvisor:
While the great mosques around the Maidan are intensely beautiful, I found this mosque to be even more fascinating than those because of the extraordinary variety of styles and decorative techniques. It is a vast complex, mainly dating to the Seljuk and Ilkhanate periods, but added to ever since, especially by the Safavids and Qajars. To describe it adequately would be impossible, so I’ll mention a few highlights. Firstly, it is well signed in English and Fasri. Excavations and restorations have found remains of its Abbassid predecessor, and these have been retained for viewing where possible, especially in the eastern veranda…….
The architecture of Atiq Mosque
Moreover, you will see different architectural arts of Iran in one place, the Atiq Jameh Mosque. You will find interesting designs in every corner of this ancient beauty. However, it has a four-iwan architectural style and each couple of gates faces each other. Each Iwan is decorated with turquoise ceramics in the shape of Muqarnas. In addition, there are 40 pillars, On the north Iwan.
Difference between Mosque and Church
Interestingly, mosques differ from churches in many respects. However, ceremonies and services connected with marriages and births are not usually performed in mosques, and the rites that are an important function of many churches, such as confession, penitence, and confirmation, do not exist in the mosques.
Moreover, no statues, ritual objects, or pictures are used in the mosque; the only decorations permitted are inscriptions of holly book (Quran) verses and the names of Muhammad and his Companions. Professional chanters may chant the Quran according to rigidly prescribed systems taught in special schools.
Prayer is performed by bows and prostrations, with no chairs; they stand in rows, barefooted, behind the leader or imām and follow his movements. Poor and rich, noticeable and ordinary individuals, all stand and bow together in the same rows. Furthermore, women may participate in the prayers as well, but they must occupy a separate space or chamber in the mosque.
